Architectural Drafter/Designer to Licensed Architect???

I’ve been working for an Arch. Firm for 4 years as an Arch. drafter/designer. I’m 26, my goal is to become an architect but it would be impossible for me to go back to school for 5-6 years and work to make enough money to support my family. So my question is can I become a licensed Arch with enough experience. I hear different stories from different people. Some say if you have 8-10 years of experience working for architects you can become licensed. Some say you can’t without 5 years education. Some say it differs from state to state. Can anyone tell me the correct info on this?

I’m fairly certain that there is only one state remaining that allows licensing through experience, and that is Arizona. All other states license through NCARB and the IDP process, which started requiring a professional degree several years ago.

Question, do you currently have an undergraduate degree (of any kind, not just architecture)? If so, then you can enter a two year (plus or minus) program to get a professional degree for architecture. Four years of experience in the field would go a long way towards getting you into a graduate program if you chose to go this direction, and some colleges have programs specifically for people with families and jobs to consider while getting their degree.
