Applying to grad school (English major) – is my GPA good enough?

My cumulative GPA is only 3.81.

I haven’t taken the GRE yet (I’m taking it next month); but my SAT scores were:

Verbal: 800

Writing: 740

Math: 670

I’m taking honors independant study courses, and I know a few profs who will definitely give me good recommendations. How are my chances? How good a school can I reasonably hope to get into?

A 3.8 is more than enough to get into grad school. SAT scores don’t apply, but study for your GRE and I’m sure you’ll do fine.

Good luck!

Yes, you shouldn’t have any trouble getting into programs with that. Maybe not the best, since they have way too many qualified applicants for a few spots, so it’s more of a crap-shot – but good luck.

What is it you expect to do with an MA in English? English majors are a dime a dozen. Before you just go to grad school figure out why you are going and see if it is worth all the student loans and time involved to go.

Figure out what school you want to apply to. Then read their entrance requirements. Judge from there if you have the prerequisites to get in.
