His portrait was used on the first $100 banknote issued by the Federal Reserve, in 1914, but the reverse shows allegorical figures representing labor, plenty, America, peace, and commerce, rather than the vignette of Independence Hall used today. From 1948 to 1963, Franklin’s portrait also appeared on the U.S. half dollar (50 cent coin), and in 2006, he will be commemorated with two silver dollars, one showing him as a scientist, and one showing him as a statesman. Although the Treasury Department says their records do not show why Franklin was selected for the $100 bill, he is an appropriate choice: Franklin not only printed currency using an ingenious anti-counterfeiting technique, and suggested the design for the first U.S. one cent coin (the “Fugio” penny), he also argued strongly for the usefulness of paper currency in his 1729 pamphlet, “A Modest Enquiry in to the Nature and Necessity of a Paper-Currency”.

In his lifetime, Ben Franklin was the most famous man in the world. He was an acclaimed writer, scientist and diplomat. He was a crucial factor in the success of the American Revolution. He had no interest in political office, but could have been president for the asking. He is well-deserving of his place on the hundred dollar bill.

B.F. is on the 100 dollar bill because he literally was the first American to become an international celebrity. Having invented bifocals, a stove, etc., being the first postmaster general, becoming Colony Governor, helping to found Penn State University, founding the first library and fire department, while helping found a new country…… (NEED I GO ON!!!!!). Benjamin Franklin deserved to be on the $100 bill Enough Said.

The United States one hundred-dollar bill ($100) is a denomination of United States currency. U.S. statesman, inventor, and diplomat Benjamin Franklin is currently featured on the obverse of the bill, while Independence Hall is featured on the reverse. The bill is one of two current notes that does not feature a President of the United States. The other is the United States ten-dollar bill, featuring Alexander Hamilton. It is the largest denomination that has been in circulation since July 14, 1969, when the higher denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and $100,000 were retired.[1]

Benjamin Franklin was an absolutely facinating person, and, of course, a founding father. You had some great answers already, so I’ll just say I’m currently reading his autobiography through Daily Lit (www.dailylit.com), and loving it – I highly recommend it if you want to know more about him.
