Why does the plate is round?

If you’re talking about a plate for food, it’s because originally they were hand made by potters using a potters wheel. It’s actually very difficult to hand make something that’s symmetrical without using a wheel, so plates, bowls, jugs, etc, are all based on a round shape. Nowadays, most of the commercially made pottery is done using a mould, so more complex shapes are practical.
If you’re talking about a baseball pitcher’s plate, I don’t know. An American may know something about the origins of the game and give some insight into this.
