It comes from the computer and the use of the binary system. The binary system uses 2 digits 0 and 1. Bascially like an on and off switch. 0 is off, 1 is on. Sometime ago they merged the 1 and the 0 in push buttons. Older computers that had a rocker or switch to “flick” had a 0 on one side and a 1 a the opposite side. Think of the light switches in your house with the words off and on, above and below the switch

When you look the symbol the upright line in the center indicates that the switch in ON when it is in the upper position, Normally by regulations all the switches are supposed to be installed such that are ON when they are in upper position. ( that small straight line represents actually the knob that you switch up or down, and in this case indicates that the knob it is supposed to be in the upper position to be ON. So every time that you connect a switch make sure to installed it in this manner.
