The custom originated with the ancient Assyrians, Hebrews, and Egyptians as a symbol of fertility and good wishes for a bountiful life. Although nowadays, you’re more likely to throw confetti, flower petals or the ever-popular bubbles. That tradition began due to the fact that rice is bad for birds to eat.

Actually a lot of people don’t throw rice anymore because it was said that it is deadly to birds. They said it expands in their stomachs and can kill them, but some say this is a myth. Many people throw bird seed now to protect the birds.

But the reason it is thrown at weddings is because it symbolizes life and fertility, and just because of the fact that it is a tradition.

This is a old custom that is suppose to with the couple a prosperous life, just as the many grains of rice they will have many blessings.

NOTE: Here’s a old urban legend about this practice…. in recent times some new generation environmentalists tried to ban this custom because it said that birds would eat the uncooked rice then it would swell up in their stomach and kill them…… ha ha ha what do they think birds eat in the wild? ha ha …you ever see a bird cooking his food?
