They discovered it first when the T-storms went over and lightning hit and a fire started and they each (and why not she?) felt the warmth of it and thought, ‘Cool.’

They picked up smoldering fragments of wood to experiment with, but when those went out due to any reason they had to try to make a fire on their own.

Anthropologists seem to think that the way they went about this was to twirl dense sticks on top of soft wood, prob’ly getting a few blisters on the way.

There was also the method of striking flint together to get a spark, which, by golly, smokers still do today.
