The cartridge has a rotating mechanism at the top of it (the clicker portion) it goes into the “down” position (ball extended) and, when clicked again, goes into the “up” position (ball retracted)

the mechanism has a way of locking into place until the next click unlocks it. some use a wheel with different depths on it. when you click the pen, the wheel turns and the pen retracts or extends. with mechanical pencils, the lead is pushed forward and jaws release and grip the lead accordingly. there’s other ways these work…
