Both of the previous posters are incorrect. Dubai now has the tallest building and it is not even finished yet. When completed the tower will be over 2000 feet.

“The Burj Dubai is expected to be finished by the end of 2008 and its planned final height has been kept secret. The state-owned development company Emaar Properties, one of the main builders in rapidly developing Dubai, said only that the tower would stop somewhere above 2,275 feet.

When completed, the skyscraper will feature more than 160 floors, 56 elevators, luxury apartments, boutiques, swimming pools, spas, exclusive corporate suites, Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani’s first hotel, and a 124th floor observation platform.”

The CN Tower in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, completed in 1976, is the world’s tallest freestanding structure. It is 44 metres taller than Taipei 101 (which is the world’s tallest completed skyscraper).

According to the article the previous answerer referenced (above), at the time of its writing (July 22), the Dubai Tower was still 40 metres shorter than the CN Tower.

There is a lot of argument (and rivalry) as to what counts as a “building” and which height should be measured. eg: spires count but antenna do not, and that buildings still under construction shouldn’t be considered. I’d suggest considering the broadest picture. Hope that helps.

The Tai Pei Financial building, 101 stories tall, also called the Tai Pei 101… in Taiwan. Last called the tallest in 2003 when it was completed.
