The Late Middle Ages.
Middle Ages are called that because they are a period of about 1000 years that came between the fall of Rome (400s) and the rebirth, or Renaissance (1400s).
The Dark Ages were the first part of the Middle Ages, from about 400 to 800. Charlemagne was crowned as the first Holy Roman Emperor in 800, after he unifed a big chunk of Europe that includes modern France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and northern Italy.
