Cognates are words which have a common origin. The idea is to look at the root of a word in a foreign language and find an English word that has a similar root. It it NOT merely a translation of one word into another language. The words don’t have to have the same meaning, but both words once derived from the same word in some other language.

For instance, the English word FATHER is a cognate of the German VATER These both derive from the Latin PATER.

Note too that the English cognate could be one among many.

And unlike what respondent Alex said, these words do NOT have to be spelled the same. That is simply wrong.

In your selections.

Gratia…..grace

benedicta….benediction (note that this is not the English translation of benedicta. (Blessed)

mulierbus….muher (in Spanish for woman)

fructus…..fruit

ventris…..ventral (such as a ventral fin on a dolphin)

sancta…..saint

pro…..for

nobis….nous (French “us”)

nunc…..now

et……et (French)

hora…..hour

mortis….mortal

Patri…..father

sicut….such (I’m guess here.)

gloria….glory
