Hardly. She was deaf, blind and mute, which for most of her childhood rendered her difficult to communicate with, but she was never in a vegetative state. On the contrary, she was quite energetic in her attempts to express herself, even before she knew how. She eventually learned to communicate fluently through a form of tactile sign language taught to her by her governess, Anne Sullivan. She later went on to become an astounding individual of high intellect, well educated, articulate, passionate and a champion of human rights.

Read the play “The Miracle Worker” sometime – it’s quite moving and inspiring story of her early years and the struggle to communicate.

Helen Keller was educated better than most. She went to a college, can’t remember if it was Yale or Harvard, but anyway they only accepted males. She fought her way in. She was the author of several books. She was even sued once for plagiarism which charge was dropped. She was an excellent horsewoman, loved to climb trees. Great sense of humor. Close friends with both Alexander Ghram Bell and Mark Twain. She did learn to speak. She read until her fingers would bleed. She just soaked knowledge in. All this and so much much more. If she was a vegetable, I wanna be one too.

Peace

She wasn’t a vegetable, but she was blind and deaf, which is great material for those Hellen Keller jokes! My favorite: What happened when Hellen Keller fell down a well? She screamed her hands off!!! Hi-larious!!!

They said that although she smelled a bit like a cauliflower, at times, her IQ was twice that of the current president, especially when he’s sober? :))

Your friend is correct. She was blind and deaf, but could speak and function cognitively- she was even an author and lecturer.

Of course not! The only thing wrong with her was deafness.

She was really smart to learn how she did!
