They were forcibly moved to the Oklahoma Territory in what is known as the “Trail of Tears.” These are 3 of the 5 Civilized Tribes–Creek and Choctaw are the other two–who lived primarily in the southeast US, and were given this title because they adapted more freely to the “white man’s way of life.” The removal resulted from the enforcement of the 1830 Treaty of Echota–a treaty not accepted by the Cherokee– which exchanged Native American lands in the east for land west of the Mississippi River. President Andrew Jackson sent federal troops to round up 17,000 Cherokees being held in camps something like a prison camp (where most of the deaths occurred , due to diseases, etc) before the movement west. Of these, only 15,000 actually made the march, and of these, about 4, 000 died. Only the Cherokees NOT living on tribal lands were free to stay where they were. About 1,000 lived on private, individually-owned land in Georgia; others lived “off the land” in Georgia; and 400 lived on land owned by WILLIAM HOLLAND THOMAS–a white man who’d been adopted by the Cherokee when he was a boy–in North Carolina (these 400 became the “Eastern Band Cherokee”).

The Indian Removal Act forced these tribes to leave their homelands and resettle in Oklahoma. Americans of the time wanted the land, and so they reasoned that they were just trading land for land. In reality, the land the tribes lived on was much richer, and it was their home. Many Indians refused to leave, and were killed in skirmishes with the army. The forced march to Oklahoma was referred to as “The Trail of Tears,” because so much of the population died on the way, due to illness and other hardships. Also, many families were separated.

My Friend Gummi says the Cherokees lived in Georgia, and were evicted when YT wanted the land, If you take into consideration what the weather has been like there lately, the anglos should have let them keep their land. I do believe the Seminloles are still in Florida, they have gone in to the casino business. The Chikasaws, were just a bunch of wankers who became extinct during a hurricane.
