Treasure Island by Stevenson why doesn’t the fort just burn down?

In Stevenson’s Treasure Island I cannot understand why the wooden fort the honorable men take refuge in does not simply burn when a fire has been set on it. Does anyone know? I would assume that a wooden fort would have just been burnt to the ground by the pirates.

and kill the excitement of the story. it has to blend in with overall story. sometimes the fire simply stop burning as there is lack of oxygen. look at a cigarette end – sometimes it jsut stop burning b4 reaching the butt.
