The NCAA has banned a lot of Indian mascots and symbols. Why are professional teams exempt?

Chief Illiniwek is no longer a symbol at the University of Illinois. The Florida Seminoles have the expressed permission of the Seminole Indians, as the Redmen of Northeatern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma have the Cherokee’s blessings.

But professional teams are still allowed. The Chief Wahoo symbol of the Cleveland Indians could not be more cartoonish, and Redskin is the N word for most Indians and yet the team representing the national capitol is called that. The Atlanta Braves still use Hollywood music and the tomahawk chop.

Do Indians not care? Does anyone at all care? Is this a non-issue? Is it ‘PC crap’, as my friend calls it? What do you think?

I don’t know where you have been, but the Indians (Native

Americans, that is … I’m not sure how natives of India feel about it) have protested the use of these nicknames.

I don’t have an issue with it. Then, again, I’m not a Native American.

The NCAA cannot compel the NFL or MLB to change.

Cleveland is most adamant, as it was named in honor of the first Native American to play the game and he played for the Cleveland Blues 9as the team was called when he played).

The Braves have been bounced around three cities through its existance, so there is an historical aspect of it

Colleges are hot beds of liberalism. Anything that can possibly cause someone to be upset they want to ban, even Constitutional rights such as the Second Amendment. (VT found out the hard way where that leads.)

Profession sports are fortunately not run by rabid liberals and they see no reason to change their names.

It’s a non-issue. If people were that offended they would go after and sue professional teams to really make an impact.
