Cherry blossoms, beautiful in themselves, are also a harbinger of sweet fruit to come. Beyond that, they are one of the traditional signs that winter is over, particularly in Washington, D.C., where the cherry trees were given to the U.S. by the Japanese as a goodwill gesture.

So cherry blossoms are a metaphor for beauty, for better things to come, for springtime, and for harmony between nations.

Had George Washington known all that, would he have chopped down the cherry tree, which then became a metaphor for telling the truth when it hurts?
