HS: Difference between Principal & Dean?

When I went to high school, there were no deans. What is a dean, as opposed to a principal? I’m looking at a school where they have a principal, 4 assistant principals, and a handful of deans.

I went to a high school that had a Dean and a Headmaster. Then I went to a college that had a Dean and a President. At both schools the Dean was in charge of students: discipline, advising, coaching, housing, feeding, mentoring, health care, student organizations, student Resident Assistants, bookstores, etc.

A principal takes care of a single school. A dean traditionally was part of a university that was made of up several colleges. However, I think now they use “dean” even in the single college or community college settings.

Deans usually deal with students (as do Assistnat Principals) and the Principal usually deals with staff and administrative matters (paper work).

The principal, despite the title is the head clerk or office manager.

They are an administrative functionary.

A pencil pusher.
