Since the beginning of the modern Antarctic tourism industry in 1969, the number of tourists in Antarctica has grown from a few hundred to more than 20,000 each year.
In 2006-2007, 80 Antarctica-bound outfitters are voluntary members of our organization.
Many, many less venture into the interior. There’s only one company that brings people into the interior of the content – Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (Adventure Network International). They have a small basecamp in the Patriot Hills of the Ellsworth Mountains of Western Antarctica. They provide logistics for private expeditions, fly climbers to Mt. Vinson (highest peak on the continent), and fly people to the South Pole. They also lead trips to the Pole (Last Degree, the whole way).
