College student-parents have dorms w/ their kid?

I’ve heard of colleges/ universities that have special programs for single parents or college students that are parents where the child sleeps in a dorm w/ the parent Is this real? Do you know of any schools that have this?

It was also on the Reba show.

If you are a single parent, or even just a young parent, who wants a college degree you are a star. Parenting alone is a full time job, but clearly you understand that a college education will open doors for you AND your child. Great job!

I believe it is Berea College in Ohio that has a program like this. As I understand it, Moms often exchange babysitting duties etc. and it is a really supportive environment. Even if you are not interested in this particular school, call and ask which other colleges have similar programs. I bet they are connected to a network of some kind.

Good luck, you are making a GREAT decision.

Well, from someone who has been both a resident and an RA I can say that waiting on things like a fridge and a microwave is a good idea because your roommate might already have them and you don’t need two sets. But, waiting for towels isn’t necessary. Bring plenty of towels and extra clothes because you’re not going to do laundry as often as you think you are. First, in my experience, you are too busy doing other things like studying and hanging out, and second there is no guarantee that you will be able to do laundry when you want to. You may get down there to find that they are all full and other people are waiting in line already. Your best bet is to bring a few rolls of quarters (some schools do it by prepaid cards too), try to do laundry early in the morning (while others are recovering from the night before), and have extras just in case. For more things you may need that you never thought about, ask.

Most state universities have family housing for couples and parents with kids. I know in particular that Montana State has a good program for that, but probably most universities do as well.

Most schools do have “married” dorms. That way, couples that are married can live together and it’s more affordable/convenient than renting an apartment.
