I would ask a reference librarian to be sure, those wonderful people at the local library trained to answer just your kind of question… but I don’t think there is any other reading version of “Catcher in the Rye” except reading it. Can you read it outloud to the person in question? And are you sure it’s appropiate to that age group?

Catcher in the Rye IS an easy read. In view of its adolescent adoration of a young boy for a slightly older boy, one might have difficulty explaining the content to anyone who has not reached puberty.

I read it at 16 and found it very moving. Call me naïve, but I didn’t pick up on the homosexual aspect til years later.

Not an appropriate book for a 10 or 11 year old. If they edited it to be G rated, it would remove all that made that book great and worth reading. I think it’s core reading in most high schools now, and even some high schoolers don’t “get it”.

catcher in the rye is not difficult to read a 6th grader should be able to manage the original text just fine.

Ummm… I don’t think that’s a good book for 5/6th grade. I wouldn’t want my kids reading it that young.
