A hobbie is something you enjoy and feel relaxed or happy when doing it. If a hobby becomes an obsession then you spend too much time on it to a point where you no longer can keep up with school work and your grades are slipping. You need to figure out if you are addicted to vidoe games etc.

A wide variety of hobbies is better that just one or two. As you are growing up yor interest change but you must get the spark of new interest from somewhere. Sitting in your room playing computer games is not going to inspire you to do anythig else if you get hooked by gaming.

Good hobbies teach you skills, perseverance, motivation ,a give you self esteem from accomplishing projects/goals.

An acting hobby could make you a more open person and give you confidence when dealing with people since you will have selfconfidence from having been in front of people on the stage. They say acting is a great hobby for shy people. Athletic hobbies bring health / exercise into your life and can be a lot of fun too. Competitive athletics is great for learning to set goals, set a training plan, and learning to follow your plan.

Hobbies can have a great influence on students. Things such as music lessons (piano, violin etc.) teach application and self-discipline. Team sports teach active living and working together towards a common goal. Involvement in groups such as scouts and cubs teach both self and inter-reliance. Facility with the internet almost always expands into competency with other computer based technologies. All of these things can contribute to the development of healthy self-esteem. As with all things, there are dangers. Scheduling too many hobbies/activities into a can sometimes pull focus from developing any real competency in a given area. If it interferes with school progress, it is a major problem that should be addressed. A NOTE TO HAROLD S: Use a little less attitude when responding to others’ questions. You insulted the questioner while correcting their spelling of the word “sight” as “site”. In actuality if one is citing a reference, support or an argument for something it is spelled “cite”. While doing so you violated what some might consider another, and higher order, spelling convention: choosing to use Ex. instead of e.g. Come on. We’re all just human;we’re on here to learn from each other. Let’s keep it civil.

Speaking from a personal point of view my hobby had little effect on my performance at school.

I probably need to put this in perspective as I was at secondary school in the UK during the late 1970s. At the time one of my hobbies was watching sports and I wrote for magazines and local media. I earned a little money out of this but there was no tie in with the school at all.

I am currently working in a secondary school and we do try to find out what the students are interested in. We have found that if you can arrange work experience that interests some of the difficult kids then things like attitude and attendance are improving.

When i was still in school, I find it more beneficial to get into interesting things that is more related with school activities. Since my hobbies are reading books, music and dance…I checked out all the school events in which I participated in, these resulted to earn more points in my extracurricular activities. I joined the school rondalla (music), theatre arts group (where i enhance not just dancing skills but acting as well) and joined academic clubs where my love and interest for books where utilised. It will help to balance your hobbies and your school 🙂

Most hobbies actually help your school work. They help you to think outside the box, and even to apply lessons you’ve learned in school and maybe even learn things that aren’t or can’t be taught. Whether you do Karate, play the piano, knit, paint, do woodwork or play soccer these hobbies all give you perspective. (kind of like triangulation as it’s used in radar)
