Thoughts and ideas about gaining teaching experience so I can get a Community College job.?
I want to apply to teach at a community college. Who has ideas for me to gain more teaching exp? So far, I have taught English for one semester in Mexico, Was a guest lecturer for an undergraduate class once, tutored a jr high girl and 2 disabled community college student for one semester. I also worked in an elementary school after-school program for a year (don’t know if that helps). What else should I try to do before I start applying for Community COllege adjunct positions?

try being a sub at a high school, then see if you can become an adjunct professor at the college in which you would like to teach

Try contacting local schools and see if they have a “writing lab” or “reading lab.” Often they hire hourly workers to staff the labs, administer testing, and tutor small groups of students. You could also network with the English instructors through there, and find out about more opportunities. Also, contact a local tutoring center (Kumon, Sylvan, etc.). They might be hiring. Besides gaining teaching experience, how about gaining some credentials?? Do you have your M.A.? Part of my MA program included a teaching practicum at a local university. The community colleges around here only hire English instructors with at least an M.A. Some only consider PhD/ABD candidates for full-time positions. For other fields (mostly vocational), they’ll hire someone with a BA/BS + 5 years, or AA/AS + 7 years experience in the field. Also, are you aware that adjuncts earn crap for wages? And full-time English community college positions are like gold-plated unicorns. Very hard to come by…

It really depends on your education level as well whether or not you are qualified to teach at a community college. You probably need at least a master’s degree. Where I’m from that’s the minimum to teach in any college, even a community college. Do you have any long term teaching experience such as in the public school system or are these just jobs that you came across? I would try to teach for at least a year in the public school system before moving up to higher education. Go for high school level perhaps. They want to know you can deal with educating adults, not just kids.
