Teachers: any teachers have tips on making friends with other teachers?

I’m a new teacher working at a new school with many teachers who were MY high school teachers. Its hard making friends with the other teachers because I am really shy. Any advice or tips? I hate eating in the teachers lounge because one guy chewed me out for sitting in his spot, but I really wanna make some friends with the other teachers.

1.

Feed them, dear…..All teachers like to eat. Put a note on the sign in board that cookies are in your room on the next teacher workday when there’s no kids. I also taught with some of my high school teachers.

2.

Put a sign up for a “TGIF” sign for happy hour somewhere close to school. Everyone likes that as well.

3. Suggest a team project for two classes: My favorite was having older kids interview kindergarten students. They then had to write and illustrate a short story using things the little kid liked-food, hobbies, favorite tv show, etc. The kindergarten teacher was thrilled, the parents were thrilled, the principal was thrilled……When teachers see you are all about kids, they’ll come around.

I just retired a year ago after 28 years. Have a great school year.

I agree…feed them. Teacher’s are like men. The way to their heart is through their stomach. My first year, I left a batch of home baked cookies with a thank you note for being so welcoming. I didn’t really do it to manipulate anyone or get on anyone’s “good side” it was true. But I think people remembered it and thought it was a generous thought.

Food is always a good ice breaker. Bake some easy but fun desert and share it with the others.

As for the guy who chewed you out for sitting in “his” spot; tell him to grow up or get there earlier.

I know you wouldn’t do it but it is fun to think about! 🙂

I’m not quite the “friendly” teacher you might expect one to be, but through the years I’ve earned true blue friends among colleagues by simply doing my work and being up-to-the-task. The rest follows…There will always be “worms” in any profession, don’t mind them. Be with the “flowers” and always trust your instinct.

The stakes are much higher for her than for you. You’re asking to risk her professional career. If this is someone you like and admire, give her a call after you graduate.

Throw a holiday party somewhere. Sounds like if they are that uptight over a seat , they need to relax a little bit …
