Should I apply to become a Primary or Secondary school teacher in Scotland? Which is the better job?

I’m currently teaching English in South Korea and my students ages range from 4 years old to 16 years old. I really enjoy teaching the Kindergarten kids as it can be a lot of fun, but I also enjoy teaching the older kids (as long as they behave). In the next month I’m going to apply to start teacher training back home in Scotland for September 2008 but can’t decide whether to put Primary or Secondary teaching as my first choice. Any advice will be gratefully received…

id never be a high school teacher. i just think high school kids are getting worse and worse where as primary school kids arnt as bad (as in the naughtier ones are USUALLY easyer to control) . i just think primary school has a nicer enviroment than high school. then again i am only speaking from my own experience in both schools so far (im in yr 9 now)

They are screaming out for secondary school teachers in Scotland, especially for subjects like maths, the sciences and computing. Whereas primary school courses are over-subscribed meaning it is harder to get a job.

However, let’s face it, Scottish high schools are not known for good discipline and you’ll probably be in for a shock after coming from South Korea to see what kids are getting away with in the classroom. Primary school discipline isn’t much better but at least there is some measure of control in younger kids.

I think you need to decide which age group you prefer teaching as well as what subjects you enjoy. You also need to weigh up job opportunities before making a final decision.
