Question for teachers only?

Were you nervous student teaching for the first time? I’m becoming a school teacher and I’m applying for the program this year. I know that when I student teach for the fist time, I’m probably going to be nervous. What was it like when you had to student teach for the fist time?

Yes, nervous….but the key is to be calm enough to not put pressure on yourself and become your own worst enemy.

Get organized…materials, schedules, policies, procedures…if necessary summarize / outline what should be done routinely at the start of class.

Ask for help / be inclusive….if you want to try to be the fountain of all knowledge, welcome…have at it. But if you set an example of life long learning for the students then you don’t have to know everything…but you should, as a teacher, have a better handle on where to and how to find the answer to questions you may not remember the answer to off the top of your head. So when they ask a question you can’t answer, turn it into a lesson and in the process, teach them how to find the answer for themselves….guiding the process along.

So, before stepping on the stage, take a deep breathe, do the necessary things to check that all is in order with your personal appearance, then your books/materials… and then, rest assured, just as happens on any trip or vacation…you are on your way, zipping along the freeway, and 2 hours of so down the road, you know all the stuff you forgot to pack! So unexpected the unexpected…nothing will go perfect…and roll with the punches.

I always tried to make sure everything was packed and ready to go the night before to avoid last minute rushing in the morning. If needed, stayed a bit longer to set things in order in the room before I went home so in case of heavy traffic or such, I could zip in and not have to set up the room at the last minute.

Hope this helps…Best wishes…and keep a good sense of humor as laughter is a great stress reliever…and when they laugh, assume they are laughing WITH you and not AT you…remember…don’t be your own worst enemy.

Of course we are were all nervous, because you only get one chance to make a good first impression. However, I don’t think that the nervousness of being in front of a class is any different or worse than the nervousness of starting any other new job.

Relax. My daughter hit the nail on the head. She said, “It’s easy to be a mediocre teacher, and very hard work to be an outstanding one.”

For the right person, being a teacher is the best job in the world. For the wrong person, it is the job from Hell.

I was totally nervous. I still get a bit unnerved when I’m observed, and I’m a 4th year teacher. The good news about student teaching is that you’ll get to spend time in the classroom with the kids before you take over, so you won’t feel like you’re going in completely cold turkey. My college had us gradually take over- one subject, then another, then another, etc. That helps too. Just know that being nervous is par for the course, and you’ll eventually get over it. 🙂

No I was not nervous cause I was trained to be a teacher and was ready to face the students. I confirmed to myself that I knew my subject well and students needed to learn .I made sure I studied the topic I will teach{ prepared my visual aid and prepared my lesson plan.and made sure I understood each step. I reminded myself not to be nervous cause being confident is one of the qualities need for a teacher and I was not going to give in to nervousness and spoil my chance of becoming a teacher,I had to control it and all that I had stated above helped me got over it.

Yes, I was REALLY nervous!!!! You normally have a supervisor who sits in the back of the room and writes down everything you say and what the students say so that you can conference after your lesson to find out where you can improve. I had friends who had supervisors that were out of control!!!! My supervisor was really layed back and told me to be calm and that she was only there to help me. One thing a teacher told me that has still stuck with me is: REMEMBER YOU KNOW MORE THAN THeY DO!!! You need to be confident in yourself because the students can smell fear! I’m sure you’ll do great!

Be afraid, be very afraid!!!!

These hoodlums can sense that you’re nervous ad they’ll chew you alive !!!

Ok, now that we got that out the way – It’ll be a breeze as long as do the following:

1. Always talk to them and not at them

2. Always hold them accountable for their decisiosn within your classroom

3. Always be yourself, because they’ll find out within 15 minutes if you’re a fake

4. Always tell them the truth

5. Always make yourself available to them, in terms of their eduational and emotional needs within the classroom

You’ll do fine!!!!!!!!

If you don’t make a mistake, you are likely not doing anything. No teacher is better than failure. Your first try will be rough but in time, you will excel, and if you love your job, your students will love you, and more importantly, they will learn.
