Question Authority- Socrates

Not just a bumper sticker a real person said it, but then cheapened by 1970’s bumper stickers… Don’t just let the powers that be tell you how to think, act or feel…

Hang in there with me; a lot of times when you see bumper stickers they are making a political, or an other statement relating to a social issue/cause.

I do not see this applying to God, parents, police, military, or others who hold a certain place of authority, or who are tasked with enforcing the rules, and our laws.

Generally I would say it means that not everyone who has a position of authority is a moral, or upstanding member of society, and may use his/her position for other than it was intended.

You are to always educate yourself on the issues so that when these elected officials make decisions, or are trying to pass laws, you can either question their validity, support or oppose; vote for, or against it by using the proper channels.

Every citizen has a personal obligation as well as a responsibility to be educated, and be politically active, or not complain about the outcome.

Learn to listen and learn to read. That means listen to what is being said behind and under what is being said. And read what is written behind what is being written. Authority told us there were weapons of mass destruction. Authority told us the earth was the center of the universe. Authority has an unfortunate history of being just plain wrong. Many times. But we also learn from authority, as children, as students. But ALWAYS QUESTION AUTHORITY.

I believe anyone has the right to question anything, anytime. But with due respect for the position of the person that holds the authority. Use diplomacy.

everything, every company, every country, even parents set down laws and rules. When kids show sarcasm toward these authority figures or don’t listen to those laws and rules and test their authority figures, it is said that they “question authority” or “go against authority.

It means, think for yourself. Don’t let anyone who seems to be in authority make up your mind for you.
