POinters on getting a job at a community college?

Hi, I am about to apply to teach at a community college. I want to either teach basic college skills or Humanities. I got my degrees from a private alternative college. Do you think that would effect my chances of getting a job at a community college? It seems that on the faculty list everyone has degrees from State Universities or a hoity toity private school.

What are some suggestions from people who have gone through and or been part of the hiring process of community colleges (especially in California) that might help me with the application/interview process?

Find out which accreditation agency standards the community college uses. That will most likely determine which candidates for the position get an interview. The college of university you attended does indeed matter. Usually you can strengthen your Vitae by taking additional degree work at a recognized college or university. If that’s not an option, develop your background in research and publish publish publish. It helps to network also. Use your friends in higher education to get an introduction to others in your field. Community colleges are usually a feed for local colleges and universities. It may be helpful to develop friendships in these areas and backdoor the process.

It doesn’t matter where you got your degrees from unless other applicants went to the same school as the person who is interviewing you. In the interview, work on promoting yourself. Be confident in your skills, knowledge and abilities and you can’t go wrong. Don’t practice your answers too much, to questions you think they are going to ask. But, be mindful that they will ask things like: why are you applying for this position? How do you feel that you are better than other applicants? What do you hope to bring to the table? What skills do you possess that will be an asset to our team? Good luck. Stay focused, and remember to be yourself.
