okay so im starting college in january after a failed attempt this fall.. college i chose was not the right fit in anyway at all.. but anyways. i ultimately want to become a 6th grade english teacher. the college i plan on attending does not have an undergrad education major. however how would it be if i major in english and minor in education. (not elementary ed, just ed.) the college does have a graduate school of education so i would prob go there after the four years… idk is this the right thing to do to become a sixth grade english teacher?! thanks!!

Hi! Depending on what state you live in you can teach Middle and High School English with only a BA in English. What you will need to do is apply through the Department of Education for the state you live in for a statement of eligibility. For the state of Florida where I live, the minimum requirement is a BA in English with at least a 2.5 GPA. They will sent you a statement of eligibility for a temporary certificate in the subject. When you are hired at a school, you will receive your temporary non renewable certificate, after which you will have a certain amount of time (in FL it’s 3 years) to fullfill certain requirements to get a Professional 7 year renewable certificate. Requirements include monitoring by mentors (experienced teachers) and your principal, seminars, classes, etc. Majoring in English is a great way to get into the field of education if your college doesn’t offer a program in Elementary Education.

My advice would be go to your state’s Department of Education website and look into Alternative Certification.

Go to a school that has an undegrad education program, it will better prepare you then any 1 class for certification. I think schools prefer the major in education versus the minor. If you are going in 6th- that is middle school in Florida. The major will help with subject matter but not in theory or helping with discipline.

get your bachelor’s in English and get your teaching certification. If your school doesn’t certify teachers or have that program, go to another school. I think it’s odd actually your school doesn’t have an education program for undergrads

regularly anybody has good suggestion! in spite of the undeniable fact that in case you have an apprehension of public speaking, do no longer look at your objective audience. that’s somewhat distracting. Do consume an excellent breakfast, gown suitable, drink adequate water before your seminar yet no longer too lots; barely adequate to maintain you hydrated and from mispronouncing issues (using fact your mouth is dry) and save your voice from cracking. additionally, do no longer attempt to memorize something. in case you get distracted, you are able to ignore your finished sequence and throw your presentation off. once you prepare, try remembering your key factors. understand your subject be counted properly so which you do no longer could attempt to remember all your words precisely. additionally, practising in front of somebody you have confidence and are tender with helps so as which you would be able to alter into tender speaking “academically” in front of somebody. purely remember, anybody at school would be apprehensive! you’re no longer the only one 🙂
