is being a teacher financially stable?

I am currently in my first year of college and I’m thinking about being a teacher. I think I would make a good teacher because I love kids and they love me. But I want to know if this job can pay for rent (how long would it take me to save up to buy a house?), provide me enough money for food, clothes, car insurance, basic necessities, etc. I know I won’t be making too much money, but I don’t want to drown in a sea of bills.

I think your location will be the big determining factor due to cost of living in your area. Do some research on salaries and cost of living in different states if you are willing to move. Most school districts post their salary schedules for the current year on the district website so you have a very good idea of what you will make.

I teach and I am buying a house in the next couple of weeks. One of the perks of being a teacher is down payment assistance and my builder gave me money right off the price of the house because I am a teacher. Every little bit helps and it almost always pays to ask for a teacher discount. That said, I am not hurting. I pay my bills every month, get plenty to eat, have cable, internet, cell phone etc and still manage to pay off my credit debt from before I was a teacher.

Basically if you manage your money you should be fine.

Depends on your location to a degree – but in general the benefits package are usually great for teachers, plus you’ll have the option of taking on supplimentary income in the summer months. Pay rates are published, so check with your local school district. Also, getting a Masters Degree will increase your pay rate as well. In some districts, the willingness to work with special needs children (autistic, etc) or fluency in Spanish can also help get a higher pay rate. (if you speak Spanish, you’ll never be unemployed in most school districts)
