OK, two. Make sure they understand the concepts of print (IMPORTANT, the first stage in learning to read) and that the words they speak, you and I speak everyone speaks, can be written down and read later by someone else. Basic I know, but so important. Also choral reading from big books as you lead and point to the words. They will join as they begin to recognize words.
Sorry, don’t know about the reading tree, but good luck with the little ones!
Learn and teach some songs that help teach English vowel sounds, rhyming songs, naming things songs, movement songs, repetitive songs.
Use a technique from reading recovery where you have the children create a very simple story – you can help them make it standard English – write it on a board and have everyone read it together. It’s powerful to use a story of their own.
Make it fun!
…They are four and five – THEY WILL LOSE INTEREST at some point.
If you mean not lose interest in reading overall show them some fun books that they can choose from (heck, a lot of tv shows like clifford came from books, so they may recognize them and see that their favorite TV characters are in books and want to read them)
