No lower than $25 an hour. When you charge more, you actually increase your value to the parents–if parents pay 60 dollars an hour for their child’s lesson, they are more likely to be punctual, to encourage their child to practice, etc. If you charge too little, you lose credibility.

If you have been formally trained in music instruction in college you could charge a little more. However, it depends on where you live. When I lived in Erie, PA my husband paid 10 for a half our session 20 for a whole hour. In Stafford, VA near DC we pay more since the cost of living is higher I think 15 per half hour session. I would call around to local music stores and see what they are charging then adjust your price to be competitive, so if they are charging 15 you could charge 12 then you still make decent $$$, but people are more likely to choose you since you are a bit cheaper. Place ads in the paper and post in local grocery stores and laundry mats ect… Goodluck it sounds fun, and won’t seem like work since you love doing it. Lastly, as a teacher I encourage you to get formal training in music education if you have not already since it seems like something you love and you can make decent money while ensuring the arts stay a part of our ever shrinking curriculum in schools.

Depends. Are you a certified Suzuki instructor? If so, you can charge a lot more. How old are you? If you’re younger than 18, maybe $20 an hour at the most? If you’re older but don’t have a lot of teaching experience, maybe $30 an hour. But if you live in NYC or something, that might be higher.

Call a local music store to see what rates are for other types of music instruction. Decide if you will charge more/less to go to someone’s home or to do it in your home. I think most of the answers you have gotten are low. Maybe charge $20 for a half hour and $35 for a whole hour….or make a different deal if they prepay for a certain amount of lessons up front. In any circumstance, payment should be given when you arrive.
