How do you teach English to a bunch of kids with extremely low skills without books.?

Can anyone recoomend a technique that won’t take all my free time but still provide the deserving youngsters an education.

We don’t have books, and probably won’t get any.

Say a sentence or short phrase in their language such as I am sitting down and then tell them to repeat what you say in english that means the same thing. Go on from there to I am going to sit down. etc. and I am standing. I am walking. etc. Start even easier with telling them a greeting such as their word for hello and the english word etc. Have them duplicate actions words such as sitting, standing, walking and saying the sentence as they do the action. Then have a student do these actions while the class points to him saying John is sitting, standing, jumping etc. and then he or she is doing this. Tell them the words for their surroundings in english first such as blackboard, chair, desk etc and attach it to John is walking to his desk etc. Then go to pictures of other things even if you draw these pictures on large pieces of papers such as their bedrooms -beds etc Kitchens, gardens, animals etc. Play I see games eg I see a dog. a rooster etc.

Get them used to the english alphabet song while you make the letters whereever you can write, on paper in sand etc. Get them to say what words start with these sounds such as apple. Or do the reverse and show them pictures of everything starting with a that you put together. After this go on to combination sounds such as tr -tree trap etc. You don’t need books. Babies don’t use books, they listen a lot and try to repeat. Constantly repeat first words used and use them in larger and larger sentences grouping with newer words used. Even when teaching them other subjects you can say sentences in your language and repeat them in english. Take stories they have learned in their language similiar to our nursery rhymes , or songs they sing while playing and translate them into english and have them repeat these and memorize them. For example in french Les trois ours and in english the three bears. Have them tell younger children the stories in both languages. Have them play using the songs in english that you have translated. etc. Have them get up and tell short stories or reports in english about anything, such as what they did the night before — when they have learned to make sentences. Good Luck ! On paper or whatever have them learn to print the alphabet and move up to words and sentences after they have a bit of vocabulary and then write their own stories. and read each others stories. A large amount of oral should come first however — the same as with a pre-school child. Teach them english action songs such as teddy bear that even english children learn eg teddy bear, teddy bear turn around, teddy bear teddy bear touch the ground etc while the children do the action. Reverse and translate english nursery rhymes into their language and then teach them in english.

hi, am not sure with the range of the age of those kids..but i hope this will help…

Teach them the fun way of learning the language. by learning the ABC’s first which is basic, don’t let them memorize it, instead sing it with them. Then, make use of flash cards with catchy pictures as an examples of it. Then later on in the progress, give them an extra fun of songs, such as nursery rhymes…and read them interesting books…

If you think that they are getting along with it, slowly, help them construct a short phrase, then to a sentence.. So that it will enable them to build a good paragraph later on.

In addition, children movies with English subtitles will encourage them to learn the language. It will show them that learning the language could be fun as well.

I get this idea that you are in a remote area, maybe a province and this is not their mother language, so I guess, you have to use some initiative to create flash cards with the help of not expensive material, such as paper cards, or even paper, crayons and watercolor.. Let them participate by asking them to draw a certain picture and along with them, label it in two language, your mother language and English…

Hope it helps…Good Luck

Try turning the lessons into songs. Besides being more appealing to children, music actually stimulates the same brain functions that are responsible for our communication abilities.

Try making flash cards by cutting out magazine pictures or pictures printed off of the internet.
