I sent my dad a text message and then showed him how to send me a response. I think it’s easiest to teach them slowly, be calm and don’t use any acronyms. If they want to type everything out full, so be it. It’s easier to do that then to learn all the shortcuts.

It depends on if you are using predictive text or not. The predictive text style may be a little hard to use for a newbe, I would go with the alphabetic mode and explain that just like the regular phone the numbers will represent letters. Sit down beside them and send them a “hello” message and walk them through the reply.

When teaching anyone a skill just remember this little phrase; “I do it, We do it, You do it and off you go”. I show you how to do it and then we do it together, you do it with me watching and then you do it by yourself

Haha… I had to teach my mom to text message. Just tell them this, “Okay, see how the number buttons have little letters on them, too?” then point to the letters on the buttons. Now, tell them how to reach the texting option on their phone. Now say, “Just press the button with the right letters on it untill the letter you want appears.” Then answer any questions they have.

Why bother ? , I’m soon to be 49 and could care less about texting , I have all I can do to type on a keyboard , I can’t imagine using a phone the size of a checkbook :))
