How can a teacher deal with a student who reports illegal drug use by a parent in the home?
Favorite Answer
It was my understanding that teacher’s were required to report this to the proper authorities (or through the school counselor, principal etc.) If the teacher doesn’t report this to the proper authorities to investigate, they are endangering the child.
Beyond that, you can do what you can to support that student.
I’m thinking about a time when a parent came to conferences, and when he took off his hat to shake my hand, a joint rolled out. The parent was a professional jazz musician, the kid (high school) was well-adjusted, articulate, and thriving. I looked the other way. But I’ve also had a student, who was homeless, because of her mother’s crack addiction. Her mother was prostituting herself in front of her daughter. I called CPS. Daughter turned 18 in the meantime, and social services stopped helping. She was advised to go to a homeless shelter. She ended up living with my family, was able to graduate high school and move on. There’s no easy solutions.
