First, get some 5th grade workbooks. You can either buy them together with his parents, or you can buy them on your own and get the parents to reimburse you later. Use those workbooks as your teaching aids.

Before you go for lessons, equip yourself with a math/word game. For example: multiplication games, hangman etc. Since the boy is impatient, you cannot expect him to sit obediently during the entire session. During appropriate intervals, play a short game with him. The idea is to engage him in learning and keep him under control. You can get more tutoring tips from: http://www.tuitionplaza.com/tutoring/ There are a lot of retired teachers/volunteer tutors who hang out there. Maybe they can give you some more pointers.

Hope my suggestions are helpful. Good luck.

if he doesn’t know all his math facts and he loves games, you can play multiplication bingo against him…plus, set goals and have a progress chart for every tutoring session, so that he can work toward a reward when he achieves them…as far as writing, focus on one genre at a time…i suggest you start looking at narrative and descriptive writing workbooks…

Maybe you shouldn’t be tutoring him. Your description of him doesn’t sound like you will be very helpful. Please re-think this decision and refer him to another tutor.
