Practice–and lots of it.

Decoding is important–the ability to lift the words off the page and verbalize them.

After one can decode well, he or she needs to work on fluency–the vocal pitch, accuracy, and speed at which one reads.

While this may sound obvious, if one is able to read with fluency, it makes comprehending the text much easier.

It’s important to think about what it is that good readers do. They visualize, they make connections, they ask questions, they draw inferences, they summarize, and they synthesize. These strategies are really the “key” that unlocks the ability to comprehend text.

This book might be helpful–many teachers have used this book to learn about teaching reading comprehension: Strategies That Work: Teaching Comprehension for Understanding and Engagement.

There are so many aspects of what good readers do to comprehend. If you are asking for yourself, I suggest utilizing self-monitoring strategies. Good readers identify when their comprehension has broken down and use a variety of “fix-up” strategies.

I would suggest by making sure that you are reading material that is at an appropriate level. Comprehension can be practically impossible if you are trying to read a text that is way above the level you independently read at. Once you have appropriate text, then you can begin to self-monitor. This involves stopping yourself occasionally to make sure that you can summarize what you’ve read, make a connection to the text, ask a question, or make a prediction.

If you are unable to do this, then you have not understood what you have read. You need to try rereading the passage and find what you have not understood.

The man above stated a way to raise your fluency.. which is how fast you read. Now in theory.. if you can read with higher fluency, then you can spend more energy focusing on what you read, not on sounding out words and such.

The best way to build up comprehension is to ask questions about the book, or have other people who have read the material ask questions and you answer. Another way is to tell someone about what you read. If you can explain it in a way that they understand, then you have grasped the concept.

You didn’t state if you want to increase your comprehension or someone else’s.. so this question is tough to answer.

Good luck

My nephew read 30 pages a day (his dad paid him $5.00/hr as an incentive) until he got to the 1 page a minute speed. It took 100 hours. Then he started to buy books on his own. ~

He now has a degree in English.

At 1 page a minute your comprehension and enjoyment takes off.

It’s possible to pay plenty of time and money searching for methods to teach your children how to learn and enhance their studying skills. Is hard to teach a small child how to learn, and even enticing them to learn is challenging in itself. However it does not need to be like that since you got the aid of the program https://tr.im/UG9lQ , Children Learning Reading program.

With Children Learning Reading you will teach your son or daughter how to split up looks and separate phrases into phonemes, an essential thing as soon as your child is just understanding how to spell.

The examining system from Children Learning Reading program makes it simple for children to learn easily and correctly, from simple words to sentences till they learn to read stories.
