Foul language in class?

How does one get students to stop using the “n-word”? Also, the word “f***”? I hate those words regardless of the connotations. (11th and 12th graders)

I use cursing as a great way to teach behavior appropriate for a situation. Part of the job of teachers is to socialize the students, which mean we teach them how to behave in various situations. You can’t stop them from using those words entirely. You *can* teach them that your classroom is not the appropriate time or place.

I also have a strict policy of respect in my room. If it’s legitimately offensive to anyone, it’s not permitted. I explain that foul/derogatory language is offensive to me and therefore is not permitted.

Warning: I have had to give up parts of my sarcastic sense of humor due to this rule, but when the kids see you restrain yourself as well, they so more willingly.

… You punish them for saying the bad words, and reward them for time spent without using them. Just like you would discipline a child for any other bad doing.

Oh, and if you’re a teacher, then you really can’t force students to stop using curse words because you don’t like to hear it. It should also be against school or county regulation. Otherwise, you will get absolutely nowhere with your requests; they will respect your warnings more if they know that, or you let them know that, you’re not the only one that has a problem with them saying curse words.

dont threaten them because they will laugh in your face, i was the innocent bystander to the teachers who were talked at with foul language. The best idea would be to offer some kind of reward for not using the language in your class such as 2 points on the next test or one free homework. they would be less likely to say the bad words if they know that something beneficial would come out of it.

Well, you could always charge them a dollar or some sort of monetary value every single time they say one of those words. Then use that money to buy the class subs or pizza at the end of the year. This would teach them very quickly that what they say may be costly.

Have them write down what the words mean to them….discuss.

Have them write down how it makes them feel when called that name…discuss.

Discuss the origin of words or what the insult means (not putting pop culture spins on them).

AND

What are the consequences if someone uses the words in class..decide as group.
