dumb question but… do you have to be great at math to be a successful math tutor?
I was never great at math, but not entirely horrible either. I really could use the extra money right now, but I realize these kids need help so I don’t want to jeopardize that for them. But how hard could Algebra I be? Plus, I am willing to study the material to refresh my memory a little.
What would you do?

Also how much time are you willing to put into studying and reviewing algebra? Are you able to contact the math teachers so that you know in advance the topics that are being taught?
When I was in college, my history teacher was unable to teach that semester. Instead of canceling the class all together, they stuck in a math professor to teach ancient history….disastrous!
Please…consider your options and consider how well versed you are in the subject. A tutor won’t do much good if they do not know how to do the problem either.
What is far more crucial to the process, however, is knowing how to understand what the student does not understand and even more important, why. Then you must have at your disposal all sorts of methods to present to your charge the material at hand in such a way that he/she can grasp it with the tools already in his/her command.
Good luck.
Of course you don’t have to be a super expert but at least you are supposed to be BETTER than GOOD and LOVE the subject you are teaching.
Yes you need to review your maths.
If you are confident to teach go on ahead.!
Happy teaching.
