I think you are right about the lack of experience. I was actually a lot harder on grades when I first started teaching. Several years of experience has helped me dial in what is an appropriate amount of work to expect.

If younger teachers grade easier it think it is for the same reason. They just are not sure where that line is between too hard and too easy and they don’t want to ere on the hard side.

I am in my 20s and just started student teaching. When I am grading I think about….do I go over this material well enough for the student to answer this question. If the answer is no then I let the question slide. For example, we were reviewing how to tell time in Spanish class, and since I was using the quiz my cooperating teacher uses (which I should have looked at more carefully) I forgot to go over 1 thing that was on the quiz…so I didnt’ count it wrong.

I can think of a few reasons.

Younger teachers might just remember a little better what it was like to be in school and they don’t want you to hate it.

Younger teachers feel closer to you emotionally, so their thinking is closer to that of a peer than an older teacher who is more of a mentor.

Younger teachers might be a little insecure and need you to like them, so they’re less critical; as they get older, they feel less of a need for approval from their students, so they get tougher.

Any or all of the above and more are probably at play in any given teacher at any given time.

When I was a new teacher, I think I graded harder. I held my students to very high standards — too high at times.

At the same time, I was also more willing to hear excuses. So deadlines could get extended, things could get shifted around easily.

After a few years, I have heard and seen it all… and I also had more realistic expectations for what my students could produce.

I don’t think age has anything to do with it. Some teachers mark too hard, some not hard enough but good teachers know exactly what grade you deserve. Simple!

In general, yes. Although be careful, since their lack of experience might also lead them to give you overly difficult assignments.
