No, they don’t gossip about students. But yes, they are often concerned about the personal lives of their students. As teachers we often see kids who are unhappy at home, who have a tough time, and there is little that we can do to help. Teachers care a great deal.

For the most part, teachers do not gossip, as such, about students. However, if one teacher is having a hard time getting through to a student, she might ask one of that student’s other teachers for insight, which might include what kind of home life the student has. Knowing where a student is coming from and what kind of support system is there can help a tacher know how to reach that student. It also helps to know if a student is struggling in all their subjects or just one, so a teacher might ask about a student’s grades in other classes.

Do some teachers cross the line between concern and gossip? Sure. But most of the time when a teacher is looking into a student’s personal life, it is related to the student’s academic life.

I’m a teacher who works on a team meaning we all have the same students in our classes. One of the purposes of teaming is to discuss student concerns and to help our students out if they start to have problems in school. Each day, we have a “student discussion” where we bring up concerns and possible interventions for students. In addition, we make a list of students that we want to reward for doing something well. We personally pull the students aside and thank them for doing a great job, give them a little certificate and a choice of a small treat. I feel that teaming is a great way to get to know my students and help them the best way that I can. So yes, we care very much about students’ personal lives.

As for gossip, teachers who are professional do not gossip. Most teachers I know will not engage in this behavior but there are a minority of teachers who do this. I hope you realize that most of us are not like this 🙂

There are a few who do gossip, some are worse than the kids. But in general teachers care about their students lives outside of school and hope they are making good choices, just as parents would.

It’s tough to say. I think some teachers care about students’ personal lives. Teachers that are professional shouldn’t gossip about their students but teachers are human too.

I’m sure that some do and some don’t.

We don’t gossip, but if there’s something important (ie, death in the family, neglect, etc), it will be discussed so that all teachers are aware of it.

Teachers dedicate their lives to children. Naturally we’re concerned and want to teach the students in a supportive environment.

Gossip, no – But be concerned and aware, yes.

I have a few students who have tremendous burdens- anything I can do to support them I do.

Teachers have many things to do but ofcourse they gossip when things are very different (rare things or situations) from others.
