In case of the UK, it should be preceded with a definite article, but England of course comes without ‘the’. There are other countries which must be written with the definite article ‘the’ such as: The Sudan, The United States Of America (but when you say America you don’t preceded with a definite article), The Bahamas, The Gambia, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, The Philippines, The Seychelles, The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and The West Indies.

The rest of the countries are written without the definite article ‘the’.
