Can I get a teaching job?

I am a Masters in English Literature from India. I have more than 10 years of college(Grade 12 and up) teaching experience. Came to US recently. Is it possible that I can get some teaching jobs in schools or elsewhere and what must I do for the same?

You will need to get a teaching license in the state that you want to teach in. In the US, we are licensed in one specific state. We have to apply for licenses if we move to another state.

Ask at any state college that has teacher certification. Each usually has an office to help with these types of questions.

Teaching credentials are needed to teach grades k-12. If you would like to work at a college, many 2 year colleges hire lecturers with simply a master’s degree. Universities always look for PhD candidates, but in shortage fields, hire adjunct faculty with only a Master’s degree. Start going to the college recruiting web sites of the places near you.

You will probably have to take an exam to certify you as a teacher in the US. With your education you should not have to take any more classes. However each state requires different things. You should contact your state’s Department of Education to help you figure out what you need to teach.

Most likely your only options will be with private school since they have different certification requirements than public schools. Otherwise, there are some school districts that will take people with degrees in an apprentice type of situation. Their requirements will vary by school districts.
