i may have more questions than suggestions,…

1. what is she expected to teach? general music, singing, or instruments?

2. does she have any kodaly training?

3. what does the school expect of her?

4. does she need to align curriculum with social studies etc.

for this age group, kodaly training is essential!

have rules and expectations for class & enforce them!

one of my biggest rules is that everyone participates together or they may have to perform alone.

my big deals are the basics, good technic, breathe control, etc.

my biggest teaching tool is model! model! model! in music, showing them how beats telling them how every time, I use 2 or 3 models (play or sing the same passage, do 1 correct and the others make mistakes) then ask which was best and why, that opens the door for the explanation of correct technique etc.

maybe some little intruments, like maracas, and things, then, they can teach them about each instrument, and little things, like quarter notes and quarter rests, and a staff and those kinds of thingss. also, theres some websites, where you print a worksheet about a famous musician with clues, and they go on the school-music-educational kid-friendly site and they use the clues to find the musician and write it down. Oh and MANYYY schools do those instruments: recorders. oh and there was a contest for kids, to make a way to remember the staff. like every good boy deserves fudge, only their own. then they can vote for their class favorites. its creative and helps them remember!
