5th grade: How many grades do you need to average for a 6 week period?

My son is in 5th grade. He has the same teacher for SS and LA. His teacher only took 3 grades in SS to average for his report card. One of them was “color the globe-neatness”. (He’s not into coloring and not very neat) He is a gifted student. He will have an 80 on his report card because he made a 70,70, and 100. In LA she only took 5 grades. He will have an 85 on his report card. He has always been a straight A student. Is this “acceptable” to only give children 3 or 5 grades to be averaged together for a report card grade? Shouldn’t there be more? I want to conference with her, but if this is standard practice I’d like to know. Thank you!

I think it would be a good idea to ask for a conference to clarify the teacher’s grading policy and to boice your concerns. If you don’t get anywhere with the teacher, try calling and asking the principal what the school policy is on grades. You might not be able to change this report card, but hopefully the teacher will take more grades during the next grading period.

I teach high school math, and at the beginning of the year, the principal told us to try for 2-3 grades per week. We don’t always take that many, but by the end of the six weeks grading period, we should have around 10 grades.
