Please help! Any suggestions?! We just got a french foreign exchange student!?

Does anyone have any advice? He’s french and he’s going to be here for a month. It’s summer time so we have to find plenty of stuff to do…we live in Atlanta…we don’t want to spend a bunch of money doing stuff. He doesn’t understand english very well. I just need some advice from someone with experience…please….thanks in advance!

Museums, historical sites, the capital buildings, plantations, picnics, swimming, Myrtle Beach (yeah, I know, it’s in SC, but not too far!), outdoor festivals, the mall (VERY different over there than here!), Flea Markets, monster truck rallies, tractor pulls, county fairs, camping!!!, hiking, and just being with your family. If you go to church, take him with you. It’s a good way for him to meet people his age who can also take him out on the local scene. Youth can speak to each other by just being youth and having fun. 😀

Generally, they just want to experience the way of life. Take him to any festivals in the area, take him to historical places. Show him your favorite places in town, explain by showing him how things work. It really is quite different here than it is there. Just taking him around town and teaching him the words for things can be exciting to him. The flora and fauna here is different than in France. Try taking him to a forest area or the countryside so he can experience that. The plantations are very pretty and indicative of southern culture.

I would just be kind and reassuring. It must be frightening to be venturing into an unfamiliar world like he is, so support is key. I would reccomend picking up a few key french phrases.

I like this website: http://www.ielanguages.com/french1.html

If he likes football (soccer) maybe you would want to learn about Ligue 1. (allez les bleus) This will help to make conversation and avoid awkward silences.

Put yourself in his shoes and treat him the way you would like to be treated.

Bonne Chance.

the idea of hosting an exchange student is for them to learn of the culture…so look for things around you to visit and see that cost nothing….capital builings, scenic views, places of history and meusums….maybe enlist another teenager to take them out also to experience the life of a teen here..like the mall or local hangouts……you dont have to spend alot of money..just your time.
