Do most 4-year colleges require freshman core classes?

Just wondering. I’m applying to Emerson and I’m still kind of dazed & confused about the whole college thing.

Most universities have general education requirements … that is, basic categories you have to fill. Think english, history, life science etc. They will vary from school to school, and you needn’t take them all at once. They are designed to give you a broad sense of higher education, and to help ensure you are a well-rounded student.

However, if you are applying to specific degree programs (like engineering or some sciences) you are waived from those requirements, as they want you to get down to your major requirements as soon as possible.

Don’t be nervous, you’ll be fine.
