With all the LEAD TAINTED TOYS, jewelry, etc. is there an approved in-home test I can use? or place to go to?

With LEAD toys, decorative ceramic plates, Consumer alerts and safety recalls… Now looking for a reliable lead tester to use in the home or a place to go to get them tested. I hate to throw everything out & start over with my toddler’s toys. Seems in general the shiny metallic paint, particulaly the reds are suspect, and especially in little girls jewelry. What about everything else, including decorative pencils, stickers, etc.???? My little girl still puts things in her mouth… THANKS! -A Concerned Mom.

Do not reply on the home test kits that are marketed for analysis of lead. The US EPA found them unreliable and give misleading results. The reliable test method that is commonly accepted is by using a machine called Handheld XRF. I don’t suggest that you purchase this machine because it costs about US$35,000. What you can do is visit some consumer protection groups or some environmental groups who offers FREE testing for lead in toys. Some of the groups that offer free lead in toys testing are the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow and the Essco Safety Check.
