What is a good SAT score for the new test (the one in 2006)? And what is a good SAT score for a 7th grader?

Like what is expected of these groups and what would be exceptional. Also for those who don’t know this is the SAT with its perfect score at 2400.

If you’re in seventh grade, you have nothing to worry about.

I took the SATs last year too, for the CTY John Hopkins thing and I got a 620 in math, 480 in Reading, and a 430 in Writing. For a seventh grader, anything about 600 is just amazing because that’s higher than the average twelth grader. A 500 is great, too. And a 400 is probably what’s expected of you or whatever. But if you’re going to take the CTY test thing, if you want to get into the camp over the summer, you have to get above a 500 something in any subject.

And for a regular twelth grader, a good test score. Anything from 2000-2400.

Honestly, it depends on your standards. Because I’m Asian (yes, how stereotypical) I have high expectations of me.

1500 is about average, 1800-2000 is what I’d consider “good”, and anything above that goes into the “great” range.

It’s good that you’re taking it so early! But, really, ANY score is good for a 7th grader—at that point, you’re taking it for fun and to see what it’s like more than anything else (I didn’t take the SAT until 9th grade, but I started taking the ACT in 7th). Shoot for, I don’t know, as high as you possibly can! I got a 22 on the ACT in seventh grade, which according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACT_%28examination%29#Score_comparison_with_SAT ) is about 1560 – 1610 on the SAT.

I’d say anywhere around average (1500) would be great in 7th grade! Because, after all, that’s average for ALL the people taking the tests, with all the high school juniors and seniors especially! If you do get below average, though, or if you’re hoping to get higher—keep in mind that you aren’t expected yet to know a lot of the math, especially. When I first took the SAT, I got 550 on the math and 710 on the verbal (before the New SAT). When I took it a year later, my math score jumped a full hundred points to 650, just because I’d been through Geometry and part of Algebra II!

Good luck!

Exceptional, you say?

According to the Johns Hopkins folks at the Study of Exceptional Talent:

Scoring above 700 on any section before the age of 13 counts as exceptional, or 10 points extra for every month over 13.

An average-ish CTY/TIP-person score in 7th grade is around 500 per section, or 1500 total. I’d wager that above 600 (per section) is good, above 650 is great, and above 700 as exceptional.

For a junior/senior, above 750 signifies a “definite shot at Ivies, if the person wants to go.”

That’s not to say that all your sections are supposed to be ever, though. A lot of kids get 800 on the math and then something in the 400s for CR, vice versa.

Similar to the what the others said a 1500 is what is considered average on the SAT exam. I would cinsider 1500-2000 a decent score. 2000 and above will get you into the higher ranking universities in the nation such as UCLA, USC, Berkeley, etc. If you are planning on going to one of the top schools in the nation such as Harvard or Yale, your SAT scores need to be from 2200-2400. I don’t think any score is good for a 7th grade student. Although most of the math concepets introduced on the SAT exam are covered in the high school years, students can get a head start by learning this information beforehand. The Writing Section on the SAT mostly consists of grammar students should have mastered by the end of middle school or beginning of high school. The easiest way to improve Critical Reading scores or to get a high Critical Reading score is by reading as many books as one can.

Here are a few books I recommend using to aid your studying.

1. TutorFox.com’s sat guide: This book sells for only 10 dollars. It was written by two students, who got a 2400 and 2350.

2. The Princeton Review’s SAT guide teaches students how to solve problems they are unfamilar. The book provides an extensive list of the most frequently covered words on the exam.

Good Luck and let me know if you have any questions…

A reasonably good SAT score for the new SAT is 2000+, and a GOOD one is 2200+. A great score is 2300+. For a seventh grader, getting a mid-600 on all three sections on average is pretty decent. I commend you for starting your SAT preparation so early; it’s never too soon to start.
