12th grade is the best grade to the take SAT. When I first took the SAT, my score was low in the mid 1700s but then I got the sat guide from TutorFox: http://www.tutorfox.com/satguide.html and my score went up to 2190 (800 math, 760 writing, 630 reading). I highly recommend this guide for anyone wishing to get a higher SAT score.

Most people take their SATs junior year, which is 11th grade. You can take them earlier, but most likely, you won’t be prepared and you will do badly. The important thing is to take it as EARLY as you can in junior year, on the first available testing date. That way, if you do poorly, you can re-take. Re taking it a few months later is a good strategy, because you will be more aware of the different types of questions and what areas you are weak in. Those few months will give you more time to prepare.

You’re supposed to take it sometime in your junior year. My SAT prep teacher said that March is probably the best time because you’ve already finished a large part of your junior year, but that also leaves time to take it again in May or June.

I first took it in January of my junior year, then again in May. Also, if you are not happy with your junior year scores, you can take it in October or November of your senior year, but keep in mind you will probably want to start applying to colleges before that.

this sounds bad, but how smart are you? i ask because if you take the PSAT (pre SAT) and score well (which you take as a freshman generally) and then take the SAT and score well, you could get to be a national merit scholar and get free money for college. (I took SAT my sophomore year thinking that i would have time to re-test and do better.) MOST people take it junior year so that they can have the time to re test and have the scores in time to apply for college in early senior year.

Talk to your guidance counselor, I think they suggest you start taking it in your Junior year. Your guidance counselor can give you the best advice about that.
