What do you get for completing a Minor?
I’m thinking about doing a Major and Minor in college, and I’m not sure what you get exactly for a Minor. Is it another degree? Do you receive certification for it? What exactly can you do with it?
Thanks.

You get to say you completed a minor. Most employers and grad schools really care only about majors, but a minor in a subject still indicates significant commitment/interest in it since you had to take a minimum number of credits. Depending on the school, it could just mean that you had all the credits to make it your major except you didn’t write a thesis in it.

It’s not another degree. A major means that you have over a certain number of courses in a particular field. A minor means that you have a certain number of courses in a particular field, but less than the major.
Having a minor just shows a kind of secondary specialization. Let’s say you have economics as a major and Japanese as a minor. It allows employers to see that you could likely do something business-wise while speaking Japanese. Or maybe you do a chemistry major and math minor. It just tells people that you’ve done a lot of studying in chemistry and a significant amount of studying in math and will know a lot in those two areas, which could be beneficial for various jobs.

A minor is just a secondary field of study, but all you get is the college credit and not another degree. You don’t have to put as many credits into a minor as you do a major. You can usually get some help with getting a job if your major isn’t really usable.
